Steel Women Hold Firm Against Pirates

The Perth Steel women defeated the visiting Queensland Pirates 3-2 at Warwick Stadium in round 2 action of the Scape Australian Volleyball Super League, bouncing back after their opening round defeat last week.

There was an even start to the first set, with neither team able to open up an early lead, but a run of points late in the set allowed the Steel to take it 18-14.

Good defensive play by both teams provided some long rallies in the second set. Shelby Maher’s strong serve and attack allowed the Steel to win the second set 18-9.

Jasmine Serra came on for the Steel in the third set providing some great hitting. Sophie Ballard came into the game putting away some much needed points for the Pirates. A golden point winning dump set by Pirate Kylee White gave them the third set 17-18.

For the Pirates, Lucy Watkins and Amy McCarthy displayed their impressive hitting skills.

The Steel had contributors across the team; Maher, Whincup, Wells and others with Jackie Tamburri returning to the team and didn’t miss a beat.

Both teams played well in the fourth and fifth sets. The Steel stayed strong to win the fourth 18-16.  The Pirates took the fifth in a golden point win 17-18. A quality game from both teams however the Steel were too good on the night.
