Vipers Strike! Melbourne Women Claim Crucial Points Against Pirates
With their finals series hopes on the line, the Melbourne Vipers Women thrilled their home crowd at Dandenong Stadium with a crucial 4-1 win over the ladder-leading Queensland Pirates in round 4 of the Scape Australian Volleyball Super League.
Emalini Toleafoa and Caitlin Waterfall combined brilliantly and each produced outstanding all-action displays for the Vipers, both in defense and attack, helping their side dominate the opening set 18-12. Waterfall’s blocking at the net and precision setting made things difficult for the Pirates, while Toleafoa’s powerful hitting continued to find the gaps in the floor and rack up the rally points.
Pirates’ young middle blocker Scarlett Rudder was impressive at the net early in the second set as her side held a lead 8-6, but an unbelievable 15th-point rally had Vipers Captain and Libero Rochelle Sison-Lim make several diving saves to keep her side in the point, eventually winning it to send the home crowd into raptures and inspire Melbourne to take the lead and then claim the set 18-16.
It was close again in the third set, but once more Melbourne proved to have the edge, and Jemma Stokes and Giorgia Todesco came to the fore for the Vipers with their power hitting and presence. The 18-15 set win meant that the Vipers could claim the majority of the competition points with still two more set to come.
The teams shared the final two sets, though, with Melbourne taking the fourth 18-13 and Queensland getting on the board by taking the fifth set 5-18.
